Part 1 - GENERAL INFORMATION
HEPC mailing list is intended as a tool for the hepatitis C community to
exchange information on medical treatments and to give and receive
support.
HEPC mailing list is open to anyone, but is mainly intended for people
who have been diagnosed with hepatitis C and for people otherwise
involved with this illness: family members, doctors, nurses etc.
We welcome personal stories, as well as relevant medical and scientific
information. Other acceptable topics for discussion are questions from
those newly diagnosed, explanation of medical terms, how to cope with
the
consequences of this illness etc.
We also welcome subscribers' discussions about the use of supplements
and herbs IN CONJUNCTION with the orthodox medicine treatments, or as a
way to alleviate symptoms whilst either making their minds up or waiting
for better treatment options, or for those who cannot tolerate orthodox
medicine treatment.
However, WE DISCOURAGE dialogues or articles talking about alternative
therapies as a standalone solution to curing Hepatitis C. There are
other lists dedicated to the alternative therapies where they discuss
the subject in depth, and if you are interested in that approach you are
kindly requested to join those lists, rather than attempting to turn
this list into an alternative therapies list.
As the following message is rather long, we recommend that you save it
or print it and keep it for future reference.
Part 2 - NETIQUETTE FOR HEPC
Traditionally, mailing lists start out with great enthusiasm and rapidly
degenerate to disputes about whose interests are best served. Our intent
is to provide a bit for everyone, but within certain limits. So here are
the netiquette rules. Please abide by them.
1. The prime purpose of the LIST is to discuss issues relevant to
Hepatitis. Messages unrelated to the central theme of the list are not
encouraged. If you decide, however, to send such a message, your
"Off Topic (OT)" post should at least have some thread that
most of the members are probably interested in.
Please, avoid posting one-liner or "me too" style messages, and post
privately other types of messages that are directed to one person only.
It's fine, for instance, if you want to let the list know that it's
someone's birthday. Feel free to post a message saying "Hey! Today is
So-and-So's birthday!". But if you want to reply to this post and send
your greetings to the birthday-person, please send them via private
email, otherwise we could
end up with tens of messages on the list which say nothing more than
"Happy Birthday". Just use some common sense, and you will know whether
a message should or shouldn't be posted to the list.
2. Try to keep your messages short and to the point. Compose your
message and spell check it, then go over it one more time to see if you
can cut out any "fat".
3. Before you post, make sure you have something to say or to add.
Messages containing the kind of "me too" postings are not
ecouraged.
4. When answering to a list mail it is preferable that you quote just
short portions of interest and then put your answer immediately
underneath. If you quote the entire post, then place your answer at the
beginning of your mail, and the quoted post at the end. Be brief and
concise. Think before you press the "Send" button.
Please
DO NOT quote entire Digests !!! Crop up just the post you
are replying to.
5. If you have a disagreement with another member and it turns out nasty, don't spill it out
over the list. "FLAMING" will not be tolerated. Take it outside if you
want to continue being a member of this list.
6. Submissions in a single case (all upper or all lower) are difficult
to read. DON'T USE ALL CAPS except briefly to enhance your point! It is
considered shouting and is disliked by all.
7. If you don't immediately see your posting appearing on the mailing
list, don't assume it failed and do not re-post it. Wait until the
next day, and only then repost it.
8. Please use a "signature" at the end of your message with your name
and email address. This will enable answering by private message if
someone wishes to answer you in that way.
9. Please also remember that we offer this service on our own time,
using our own resources, and we do it for free.We do this because we
care, and we understand, and we want to help. Please don't make our life
difficult.
10. When going away for more than 2 (two) days, please set
yourself to NO MAIL. If you don't do this, your
mailbox is going to fill up, and the messages sent to you by the HEPC
list will be sent back to the list-server, which will automatically
set you to "No Mail" without notice (once your email server stops
accepting new posts for you a notice cannot be sent to you). In such a
case when you come back you will
have to visit
http://www.hepatitis.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/hepc
in order to change your settings to receive mail.
11. Automatic subscribing and unsubscribing is possible at the following
URL:
http://hepatitis.org.uk/hepc-list
Please do not send unsubscribing or other administrative requests to the list. In case you have
troubles with unsubscribing send an email to the list-owner at
12. Please note that if your mailbox starts rejecting posts
from the list your email address will be set to NO MAIL automatically! If you stop
receiving mail without any apparent reason (you did not unsubscribe or set
yourself to "No Mail") please
visit
http://www.hepatitis.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/hepc
and change your settings to receive mail.
Do not worry, it is not possible to subscribe the same e-mail
address twice !
That's all about 'netiquette'. I know this looks like a lot
of "stuff", but if you pay attention to what it's saying,
you'll see that it's all really just common sense.
Part 3 - CONDITIONS OF USE
To ensure that everyone may use and enjoy the HEPC mailing
list to the fullest, we want to stress the importance of
observing both the rights of other users, and a few basic
rules of courtesy.
This document sets forth both how users should generally conduct
themselves on-line, and the Terms and Conditions of using
the HEPC mailing list - which explain some of the rights
the list-owner has, as well as actions the list-owner
may take in order to maintain the minimum standard
set forth in these Terms and Conditions.
Please be aware that the list-owner and/or the web host providing
the software and the e-mail account for the use of HEPC mailing list are not
and cannot be held in any way responsible for the conduct of
the HEPC mailing list users, or for the content of the messages
exchanged on the list.
Any complaints regarding the behaviour of other list-members
or suggestions for the way the list is run should be addressed
PRIVATELY to the list-owner at
The HEPC mailing list will most probably grow in time,
and consequently, the list-owner reserves the right to
modify the Terms and Conditions as he considers fit. Any such changes will be
announced on the list as a public
message to ALL.
Before you begin contributing to the HEPC mailing list,
please familiarise yourself with the following:
A. Conduct: Users of HEPC mailing list are asked to observe
at all times the requirements of common courtesy, just as
they do in their everyday life. Consequently, please do not
be rude, offensive or cruel to other users.
B. Purpose of Use: Subscribers may use the HEPC mailing list
only for lawful purposes, and are prohibited from posting
or transmitting through the HEPC mailing list any unlawful,
harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, defamatory,
vulgar, obscene, profane, hateful, racially, ethnically,
or otherwise objectionable material of any kind.
C. Communication: Our goal is to provide an interesting,
informative, and supportive place where everyone feels
comfortable and welcome.
Personal attacks, name-calling, vulgar, obscene, abusive
or hateful language, as well as the transmission of content
which may constitute intimidating, hostile or offensive
material of any kind, including on the basis of sex, race,
colour, religion, national origin, sexual orientation,
or disability is incompatible with this goal, and is prohibited.
As a rule of thumb, please be advised that language which
could not be transmitted over the public airwaves under
the British Law cannot be used on HEPC.
If you are not sure whether your post is appropriate or
within the rules, please send it to the list-owner
before posting it to the list. Finally, please use your
best judgement, be respectful of other users, and help keep
our on-line community a pleasant place to visit.
Give everyone a full and fair opportunity to be heard.
D. Commercial use, Chain Letters and Pyramid Schemes: You
may not use the HEPC mailing list to advertise commercial
products. Sending to the list anything that may be considered
as advertisement, chain letters or pyramid schemes
of any kind is strictly not permitted on HEPC, under the
sanction of immediate removal from the list without
prior notice, at owner's discretion.
E. Religious Proselytising: There are on the internet
other groups devoted solely to discussing religious
subjects and/or for sharing your beliefs.
Take your post to one of them. It's not welcome here.
F. Privacy: Any and all messages posted to this list
are not to be copied, forwarded, used or referred to outside of the list without
prior written permission from the author(s) of the message(s). Any person
subscribing in his/her capacity as employee of an organisation or institution,
or as a journalist (even freelance) researching for an article shall be
considered as acting on behalf of his/her employer and/or organization who
commissioned or published the article in any form (on paper or electronically,
including on the World Wide Web), thus engaging the full liability of that
organization or institution.
We shall not hesitate to use the full weight of the law against those infringing
the privacy of HEPC-List subcribers., at owner's discretion.
The reverse is also valid: all correspondence exchanged
privately is to remain private and is not allowed on the
list (unless all the persons involved agree beforehand
to send that particular post to the list), under the
sanction of immediate removal from the list without
prior notice, at owner's discretion.
The only exception to this rule are INFO messages containing only
informational text, which may be used as teaching and
support aids in hepatitis support groups or doctor's
offices. If an INFO message contains references to a
list-member or refers to the situation of a list-member,
ALL personal identifying information will have to be removed
from these INFO posts before copying them, unless permission is
specifically given by the author of the message to leave it
intact. If a list-member has stated in the INFO message
that he/she does not wish for it to be copied outside the list,
then that wish will be honoured. Crossposting (sending to HEPC-List posts from other lists,
or the other way around) is not allowed without express
permission from the author of the message (and a short notice
at the beginning of your post, saying that you do have
the author's written permission), under the sanction
of immediate removal from the list without prior notice,
at owner's discretion.
G. Attachments and HTML coded e-mails are not allowed on
HEPC list (this is in fact in order to protect YOU
from computer viruses and other internet nasties), under the sanction of immediate
removal from the list without prior notice, at owner's
discretion. Make sure your email program is set to use
"Text Only" or "Plain Text". If you are not sure how to
check this or how to set you mailer to "Plain Text", ask
the list-owner, at

H. Collecting active List-Members e-mail addresses with
the goal of sending them unwanted e-mails (for any of the
purposes mentioned in the preceding Rules A-F) is not
allowed on HEPC List, under the sanction of immediate
removal without notice. We will support our list-members
in taking any legal steps they may consider appropriate.
Part IV - SANCTIONS
A. The list-owner reserves the right to prohibit conduct,
communication, or content which he deems at his
discretion to be harmful to individual members, the
community of list-members here on HEPC mailing list, or
other third party rights, or to violate any applicable law.
However, it should be noted that neither the list-owner
nor the mailing list host have the practical ability to
restrict conduct, communication or content PRIOR to
transmission on HEPC mailing list, nor are they able
to remove or edit questionable content after on-line
posting.
B. The list-owner has the right to stop conduct on the
HEPC mailing list which he considers of leading to restricting
